Athens Township

The township is governed by a three-member board of trustees, who are elected in November of odd-numbered years to a four-year term beginning on the following January 1.

Athens Township is one of the fourteen townships of Athens County, Ohio and 1,308 in the State of Ohio.

A regular meeting of the Athens Township Board of Trustees will be held on Tuesday, September 22, 2026 starting at 5:30 PM at the Athens Township Hall, 313 W. Union Street, Athens, OH 45701. All meetings of the Trustees are open to the public as required by Ohio Revised Code Section 121.22. Public attendance is encouraged and every agenda includes a public participation section. Athens Township and the Athens Township Board of Trustees support the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). ATHENS TOWNSHIP TRUSTEES ADOPT DATA CENTER MORITORIUM RESOLUTION

On Saturday, August 1, 2026, the Athens Township Trustees met in special session and adopted Resolution 08-01-2026, “A RESOLUTION DECLARING A TEMPORARY MORATORIUM ON THE RECEIPT OF APPLICATIONS, PROCESSING, OR APPROVAL OF APPLICATIONS FOR ZONING CERTIFICATES FOR DATA CENTER DEVELOPMENT WITHIN THE ZONED PORTION OF ATHENS TOWNSHIP, ATHENS COUNTY, OHIO, AND TO ALLOW FOR THE STUDY AND ADOPTION OF AMENDMENTS TO THE “ZONING CODE FOR A PORTION OF ATHENS TOWNSHIP IN THE PLAINS, OHIO”

Meet Elected Officials

In Athens Township, Trustees are responsible for managing the township’s affairs, including road maintenance, repairs and signage (54 miles), fire protection (The Plains Volunteer Fire Department and the Richland Area Fire Brigade), cemeteries (Union and Wolf-Plains), parks (The Plains Community Park), Zoning (only in The Plains portion of Athens Township) and nuisance abatement (Ohio Revised Code §§505.86, .87 and .871, as well as managing the township budget and maintaining township assets and equipment.
