The Athens Township Trustees will be closing Athens Township Road 242, Luhrig road from the address 6733 to the address 6449 starting on Monday April 23 at 8:30 am until Friday April 27 at 5:00 pm for removal of an old railroad pier. We are sorry for any inconvenience. LOCAL traffic will be maintained but thru traffic will not be possible.
ATWP residents that travel Hooper St:
When the slip on Hooper St happened this spring, our first assessment was; that this repair required more than the Twp resources ie:manpower equipment, could handle. We first contacted a couple of contractors to get some prices; their numbers came back around $125,000 cash. While not impossible to come up with, but it would pretty much scrap our chip/seal paving program for this year. So we went looking other directions. We made a deal to collaborate with the County and repair in house. With their added resources. Well this was the plan but the county themselves had several slips to repair so our project kept slipping back on the schedule. This turned out to be lucky for us as in the meantime Athens County was included in a group of county’s in SE OH that got declared a Federal Disaster area due to heavy rains this spring and so many roads in the area that were in the same shape. This means we now have FEMA to pay for 75% of our repair costs. But this slid the schedule back some again due to: FEMA paperwork and meetings, preparation of bid documents and criteria and time for contractors to prepare their bids.
Work was to begin on Monday Sept 19 but the weather has held us up again. I have been informed that work will begin on Tuesday September 27 with the road being closed down for approximately 2 weeks starting Wednesday September 28. Of course Local traffic will be maintained from either end.
I am sorry for the delays but in times like we are in now we have to get ”creative” on the funding side of things. We are doing our best to try to do more with less but it is tough. The Athens Twp road crew will begin road and ditch improvements.
Local traffic will be maintained to the best of our abilities but occasional closures will occur. If it is not necessary for you to travel this road please detour. Work is estimated to last about a week
